How to Plan Layered Lighting in a Living Room

Layered lighting means three separate circuits, dimmed separately: an ambient wash for the whole room, task light where work actually happens, and accent light on the vertical surfaces. Plan them in that order, because each one is a decision about emphasis only once the layer before it is right. Set the final scenes on site, after dark, with the furniture in place.

  • Colour temperature swatch cards, 2700K to 4000K

  1. 01Map what the room is actually used for

    Walk the room at the hours it gets used and write down what happens where — reading in the corner armchair, homework at the dining end, television after eight. Layers are placed against activities, not against furniture, and a scheme drawn from the furniture layout alone lights the sofa and leaves the person on it in shadow.

    • Note each activity, where it happens and at what hour
    • Mark the windows and which way they face
    • Photograph the room after dark, before anything changes
  2. 02Set the ambient layer first

    The ambient layer is the one that lets someone cross the room safely and see every face in it. Aim for an even wash of roughly 100 lux at seated eye height, from indirect sources — a perimeter cove, wall washers, or uplight from tall floor fittings. Getting this right first makes every later layer a decision about emphasis rather than a rescue.

  3. 03Add task light only where the room does work

    Task light is local and bright: 300 to 500 lux on the surface, from a fitting close enough that the light lands on the work rather than on the room. A lamp beside the armchair, a pendant low over the dining end, a strip under the shelf that holds the record player. Anything that is not a task gets nothing here.

  4. 04Place accent light on surfaces, not objects

    Accent light is what makes a room read as designed rather than merely lit. Aim it at the vertical surfaces — a plaster wall, the face of a bookcase, a stone return — at roughly three times the ambient level. Pointed at objects instead, it produces a room of small bright spots with dark air between them, which photographs well and is unpleasant to sit in.

  5. 05Put every layer on its own dimmed circuit

    Three layers on one switch is one lighting scene, and a living room needs at least four across a day. Give each layer a dimmable circuit of its own, confirm the driver is rated for the lamp before anything is ordered, and set the scenes on site after dark with the furniture in place. Commissioning from a drawing at two in the afternoon is how a scheme that works on paper ends up unusable at night.
